Keynote Speakers

Baek-Young Choi

A Professor of Computer Science in the School of Science and Engineering at the University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC). She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Her research focuses on networking and communications, with specific interests in the Internet-of-Things, software-defined networking, cybersecurity, and smart city technologies. Dr. Choi has published five books and over 150 papers in top-tier journals and conferences. She has held fellow and visiting positions with NASA, the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, Korea Telecom’s Advanced Institute of Technology, and Seoul National University. She is currently an IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer and serves as Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Communications Magazine. A senior member of both ACM and IEEE, she is also the former Chair of Women in Communications Engineering (WICE).

A poetry major turned data analyst, Erin’s approach to data analytics is firmly rooted in the humanities. Her work draws heavily on storytelling and design, with a steady eye on the intended audience. An exceptional teacher, inspiring speaker, and fully-fledged data geek, Erin founded her company Data Dozen to make data analytics more approachable. Her data workshops have been hosted by corporations, nonprofits, and universities across the nation, including Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, and Yale University, among many others. Her people-first approach and unwavering enthusiasm continue to set Data Dozen apart. She and her family live in Kansas City where she runs The Bar Chart Club, a local data visualization group that meets quarterly to connect, learn, and nerd out about data.
